Description

This course aims to introduce students to the basic concepts that inform the study of language using corpus linguistics tools. Another aim is to familiarise students with a number of existing corpora, and the rationale behind their creation and use. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of basic theoretical concepts and issues related to the structure, types, and development of corpora; they will be also presented with the applications of said concepts in different areas of applied linguistics and language studies (i.e., discourse studies, text linguistics, literary investigations). By the end of this module, students will have gained the basic knowledge and skills that will assist them in undertaking research in corpus linguistics.

Assessment: Students' summative assessment will be based on the final exams.
