G-LSUD4 ComThe495E Diploma Thesis

Course type

This course requires the student to undertake and produce a substantial piece of research of his/her own doing (10,000 words, approximately 50 typed pages, Times New Roman 12, double-spaced), demonstrating scholarly ability, independent thought and a good grasp of academic style. The Diploma Thesis is meant as an opportunity for the student both to complete a large-scale project and to make use of the skills acquired during the undergraduate studies. Students interested in registering for the Diploma Thesis should arrange well in advance with a member of the teaching staff to act as supervisor of the thesis. Students are expected to have regular contact with their supervisor throughout the semester. Only fourth-year students are eligible to register. The procedure for registration requires that the student present a written statement of approval by the supervisor to the Secretariat (there is a  downloadable form for that purpose).  Previous experience in writing research papers is required; it is highly recommended that students have taken Lit9-390E beforehand. One copy of the thesis should be submitted to the Departmental Library in electronic form (CD) and a second to the supervisor (CD or hardcopy). The course lasts one semester and the thesis regards the work of a single student.

Assessment: Research paper of approximately 10,000 words. This word count should include all footnotes but not bibliography or appendices.
