Title: Subtitled Films and "Translation": Transparent Windows Workshop

A workshop with the title 'Reading Between the Lines, Seeing Beyond the Images: Multimodal Construal, Translation and Reception of Implicit Meaning in Subtitled Film' will be offered on Thursday December 13th, 2018, by Dr. Louisa Desilla (Assistant Professor, Department of Translation and Intercultural Studies, School of English, AUTh).

This workshop is going to take place at Room 417 (New Philosophy Building, AUTh; 4th Floor) between 18:30-20:30.

Language of the workshop: English.

ÅVENT ABSTRACT
The aim of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the construal, translation and reception of implicit film dialogue meaning by filmmakers, subtitlers and audiences, respectively. Through a series of hands-on exercises, participants will be introduced to the particularities of investigating implicatures in the polysemiotic and cross-cultural environment of subtitled films as well as to specific methodological tools for testing utterance comprehension by actual audiences. The primary focus will be on questionnaire design and experimental data analysis.

BIO INFORMATION
Louisa Desilla, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Translation and Intercultural Studies, School of English Language and Literature at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her principal research interests reside in the pragmatics of intercultural communication and audiovisual translation as well as in the reception of subtitled/dubbed films. As a Teaching Fellow at University College London (UCL), she was co-investigator on the AHRC-funded networking project entitled Tapping the Power of Foreign Films: Audiovisual Translation as Cross-cultural Mediation in collaboration with the University of East Anglia. She is currently exploring the pragmatics of intimate communication across cultures and digital media. She has published her research in international academic journals in the fields of Linguistics and Translation.
