The course provides an introduction to the most significant avant-garde movements of the 20th century in cinema (e.g. Surrealism, Expressionism, Impressionism, the American scene of the 1960s and ’70s, e.g. structural film, expanded cinema) and examines how these avant-garde movements, from Europe to America, contributed substantially both to the formation of the possibilities of a new visual language and to the exploration of human perception and consciousness, as well as the boundaries of reality. Beyond traditional cinema, the investigation also includes forms of animation, video, and alternative modes of moving-image exhibition (screenings in public space, immersive and intermedia projections), emphasizing the historical continuity of the avant-garde through its decisive influence on contemporary post-cinematic media.
