The School of English cordially invites you to the following lecture on Thursday January 16th 9-11am in Room 107.

Title: Poetics – (Mis)understanding – Translation

Guest Speaker: Dr Marta Kaźmierczak, University of Warsaw

Abstract: The lecture Poetics – (Mis)understanding – Translation will focus on literary representations of situations demanding sense-making. The translational implications of such a poetics will be discussed for several language combinations. The audience will be invited to reflect on the traces of the translators’ construal of the texts as well as the ways in which intercultural mediation influences (steers, facilitates, impedes) the target readers’ comprehension. The material includes a short story presenting communication itself as a charade and making sense as a (fallible) deciphering procedure, a literary description of a game of charades and an apparently intended conundrum for the reader. A multimodal perspective will be adopted, including references to visual implications of texts, illustrations and film adaptation.

Speaker’s bionote: Marta Kaźmierczak, PhD, assistant professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw. She holds MA’s in English and Russian and PhD in the Humanities. Her main research interests are cultural aspects of translation, intertextuality, intersemioticity, poetry translation. She has authored the monograph Przekład w kręgu intertekstualności. Na materiale tłumaczeń poezji Bolesława Leśmiana [Translation in the domain of intertextuality. A survey based on the renditions of Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry] (Warszawa 2012) as well as numerous papers devoted to translation and reception. Her recent publications in English concern verbal-visual puns in translational perspective, renditions of Jacques Brel sung in Polish or mapping the concept of quality over that of retranslation.

It is recommended that students attending the lecture do the following preparatory work if possible:

  1. To read or reread chapter XVIII of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. In fact, it will be enough to read the first half of the chapter, about the charades and their aftermath, until the words “explore its secrets and analyse their nature”.   2. To recall any film adaptations of Jane Eyre and try to remember if the charade scene was included and if so, what it looked like.
  3. Bring to class any Greek versions of Jane Eyre so that we could look up certain elements and compare to translation solutions in other languages, as well.
