This course introduces students to American cinema by focusing on selected important filmmakers representing different periods and styles of filmmaking, including classical, avant-garde, and post-classical American cinema. Alongside studying films and filmmakers, students get introduced to key film theoretical concepts and frameworks, and work towards a research paper that explores a film topic in more depth. Individual research is accompanied by engagement in group work, presentations and discussions, in order to enhance critical reflection.
