This
course will look closely into several literary texts and films to trace different
representations of translation and interpreting, highlighting the cultural,
historical and political dimension of translation. Through the works examined,
students are expected to develop an understanding of the little-recognised role
of translation in various contexts. Textual analysis will pair translation and
interpreting with concepts such as (in)fidelity, agency, (in)visibility,
(un)translatability, power and identity, challenging established views of
translation and revisiting old debates within the field of Translation Studies.
Translation and interpreting will be contextualised historically and culturally
to provide an overview of their different functions and conceptualisations in
varying circumstances. The significance
of translation as a means for cultural and social change will be stressed. Some
of the writers and directors whose work will be discussed in class are: Jhumpa
Lahiri, Brian Friel, Italo Calvino , Sofia Coppola, Sydney Pollack and Michel
Ocelot.
