'From Boy on A Dolphin (1957) to The Day the Fish Came Out (1967):
A Decade of Hollywood Production in Greece' – Masterclass by Prof. Yannis Tzioumakis
The Translation, Interpreting and Communication Lab of the School of English, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Cinémathèque) has the pleasure of inviting students to the tribute event “From Hydra to Los Angeles: The ‘runaway’ productions”. The tribute focuses on Hollywood movies produced in Greece in the period 1957-1967, and features a masterclass by our guest speaker, Prof. Yannis Tzioumakis, Reader in Film and Media Industries at the University of Liverpool. In addition to the rare opportunity to see three classic ‘runaway’ movies on the big screen, registered students will attend a focused masterclass on such productions by a renowned expert on the field along with free entrance to one of the film screenings.
Prof. Tzioumakis will examine Hollywood’s production activity in Greece in the period, paying particular attention to its relationship with the Greek film industry, the country’s political and cultural institutions and the ways in which these films were received by the popular and the trade press of the time. Emphasis will also be placed on how the Hollywood studios saw Greece as a country that was developing rapidly after WW2 and the Civil War of 1946-1949 and contributed to its modernisation. Using primary sources from a number of archives based in the United States, the talk will present the first comprehensive examination of the phenomenon of Hollywood’s runaway productions in Greece and the country’s response to it.
You can find the full abstract of the masterclass, as well as information about Prof. Tzioumakis’ academic profile and publications here.
The masterclass is open to the public and seats are limited, but ENL students that register for the event will be prioritized, and will also be granted free entrance to the screening of Boy on a Dolphin right afterwards (courtesy of the TIFF). The program of the event is as follows:
