Petition to save English at Birkbeck

Dear all,

I am writing to you on behalf of English at Birkbeck, University of London to invite you to sign and circulate our petition among colleagues, students, and associations that are interested in supporting English and reversing narratives of changing demands and irreversible decline of English as a discipline: Petition Link.

Birkbeck English came second in the UK and first in London in the recent Research Excellence Census, as reported in the Times Higher Education Supplement (REF2021). You can read a statement of support jointly issued by the English Association, University English, and the Institute of English Studies here.

Birkbeck English is proud of its two hundred years of radical learning, the earliest institution to teach English in the country since its founding in 1823. Our commitment to widening participation, diversity, and our expertise in educating working people is crucial to safeguard at a time when the discipline risks being redrawn as an elitist subject for the few.

Please join our campaign by signing our petition. It would also be brilliant to have your support as the European Association of English Studies in a letter addressed to: Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Latchman (vc@bbk.ac.uk) Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Matthew Innes (m.innes@bbk.ac.uk) Chair of Governors, Sir Andrew Cahn (a.cahn@bbk.ac.uk).

Thank you for your support
Best wishes,

Luisa Cale', on behalf of the Department of English, Theatre, and Creative Writing at Birkbeck, University of London
