Dissertation title: Using Multimedia to teach Edgar Allan Poe's Tales and Poems in the EFL Classroom
Supervisor: RAPATZIKOU TATIANI

The topic of the MA dissertation reviews the connection between the teaching of Literature with web 2.0 tools in the EFL/ESL university classroom in an effort to highlight the need for an educational approach which promotes active and collaborative learning within a participatory culture so as to suit the needs of 21st century learners and enhance their language skills. The web 2.0 tools explored are Wikis, Storybird and the social media application, Twitter due to them being often used in EFL/ESL university contexts with most research showing positive evidence. As for the literary material to be used as a case study, this is Edgar Allan Poe’s “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” while Wikia (Fandom) is suggested as a wiki example site. Poe’s detective fiction short story challenges its advanced adult audience as it is linguistically rich and complex and its socio-cultural issues can be critically approached, while the pedagogical value of the detective fiction genre leads to engagement with the text. The lesson plan suggested is conceptualized for an audience of B2 (undergraduate) university students and it is utilizing the collaborative nature of the websites along with the social dimension of Twitter to expose students to more diverse, meaningful and engaging environments where learning –grammar, vocabulary and text analysis- is mostly an implicit, participatory sharing. The theory presented in the dissertation draws on Lev Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory and other cognitive theories around Second Language Acquisition as well as on the theoretical frameworks of Collaborative Learning and Writing, Henry Jenkins’s Participatory framework and Richard E. Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia, among others, as the core threads of the argument presented.

Supervisor: ALEXIOU THOMAI

Nowadays, children and teenagers are constantly exposed to digital media in all forms—smartphones, televisions, computers—spending more time in front of screens rather than holding books and papers. Though the use of films in teaching is not something new, it still consists a shift from the traditional teaching methods and can be successfully used for learning and for practicing skills necessary in language learning; namely speaking, listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary. The current MA study has been conducted with attention paid to 29 young teenagers, aged 12-13, whose language level is A2-B1 (CEFR). The vocabulary used in the film excerpts has also been used in the lesson to enable and enhance students’ language acquisition. Use of L2 has been exclusive. Children’s knowledge has been tested with a productive free writing, and a receptive multiple choice, test explicitly in L2, offering the opportunity to the students to use words in a sentence and identify the words by their meaning. After a specially designed course, explicitly in L2, whose outline description will be given, students are reassessed. Self-developed questionnaire has also been used to record students’ thoughts and feelings about the course. The aim of the study is to help students get a more realistic panorama of the cultural aspects of the language, to improve their language skills, to think critically and to develop their own strategies of using films in language education. Concerning the second stage and the conceptualization of this dissertation, it should be mentioned that twenty 45-minute lessons have been planned and carried out in order to familiarize the students with the language used in the film (see Appendix 1), raise cultural awareness and enhance students’ understanding of the significance of contextualized vocabulary in a film. This teaching intervention has been designed in order to expose learners to authentic language input, and help them activate mechanisms of understanding the utterances in a context and with the use of audiovisual aids. This dissertation aims at enabling students get a more realistic panorama of the cultural aspects of the language, improving their language skills, enhancing critical thinking and exploring ways of using films in language education. ?

Satan is a very ancient figure, but not at the very least aged. His influence on the moral and social life of people and his representation in the arts is timeless, from antiquity to the present day, from Pluto and the Underworld to Dante Alighieri, John Milton, and William Blake. The latter, with his work ‘The Marriage of Heaven and Hell’ gave for the very first time a voice to the ‘adversary’, the opportunity to present the value system and the orders of Hell, presented him to act and not to react. William Blake's Satan is an outright figure, and his voice is if not seductive, at least complete, and interesting. The aim of this thesis is to present the figure of Satan, as it is represented in the arts after the 17th century, a period that was revived, starred, and acquired its known form until today. Emphasis is placed on William Blake's ‘Satanism’, as presented in his work ‘The Marriage of Heaven and Hell’. In between, necessary stops are being made in other literary references to Satan, such as in the work of Mary Shelley and John Milton, to highlight the avant-garde and uniqueness of William Blake's contribution to this mythological figure. Finally, the influence of Blake's Satan on modern people who identify as Satanists is also presented.
