Eleni Skourtou 

Dr Eleni Skourtou is professor for linguistic and cultural diversity at the Department of Primary Education of the University of the Aegean in Rhodes/Greece She is also Adjunct Professor at the Hellenic Open University.

Her research and teaching (in the context of undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral studies) focus on language diversity in education in Greece, on bilingualism, on learning Greek as a second language, on orality/literacy / multiliteracies, meaning making in linguistically diverse contexts and learning, on heritage languages.

More specifically, Dr Skourtou has been researching issues related to the education of bilingual students of diverse background in Greece (i.e. immigrant students, students from culturally mixed families, Roma students). Currently she is involved in the education of Roma children and of refugee children.

Dr Skourtou has published (by herself or in collaboration with colleagues) in scientific journals, in edited books and in conference materials, she has edited books in Greece and internationally, she has provided expertise both for the Greek Ministry of Education and for the Greek Ministry of Home Affairs.

Since 2016 Dr. Skourtou is member of the Academic Supervisory Committee for a new English speaking postgraduate program at the Hellenic Open University called “Language learning for Refugees and Migrants”.
